Sporting betting sector regulation is expected to be completed before the 2022 World Cup

Sponsorship of Brazilian football sports betting websites is reaching a record this year in Brazil. Several Brazilian football teams have already understood that this type of partnership is essential for the clubs’ coffers.

Sports betting sites have definitively entered Brazilian football and are already playing an important role in the revenue of some of the clubs when it comes to shirt sponsorship. It also has an action-engagement vector that, if put to good use, can capitalize on new variants.

The sporting gambling industry sponsors 85% of Brazilian clubs in the first division. Currently they are representing a significant part of television advertising as well. Below is the list of Serie A bookmaker site sponsors:

Brazilian Serie A: 19 clubs

  • Dafabet (América-MG, Palmeiras e Santos)
  • Casa de Apostas (Bahia)
  • Betano (Atlético-MG and Fluminense)
  • Betmotion (Atlhetico PR)
  • Betsul (Ceará, Chapecoense, Fortaleza, Grêmio, Internacional)
  • NetBet (Red Bull Bragantino)
  • Sportsbet.io (Flamengo e São Paulo)

Pending regulation

The possibility of placing bets on the internet gave rise to a movement for change in the country, materialized by a very simple question: why Brazil cannot regulate the activity and start collecting taxes and duties with it?

At present there are around +450 sports betting sites from abroad that operate in Brazil without any type of taxation. To try to control this, in December 2018, the Federal Government sanctioned Law 13.756/2018, authorizing the Ministry of the Economy to create rules for the licensing of fixed-quote sports betting operation in Brazil.

According to the Brazil Federal Government portal, the modality would be an exclusive public service of the Union, whose commercial exploitation would take place throughout the national territory, in any commercial distribution channels, physical and in virtual media.

All of this legislation was expected to take effect in 2019, it was later postponed to 2020 and now we are expecting it to happen in the near future. According to the Secretary of Evaluation, Planning, Energy and Lottery, Gustavo Guimarães, the government expects the sports betting industry to be regulated before the end of the year and up and running by 2022.

The Brazilian Government’s goal is to have the sports betting market operational in Brazil before the FIFA World Cup in 2022, although the government is aware that reaching this date will be a challenge.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has signed off on a federal law that regulates a number of industries, including sports betting last week. The modified article restructures the tax regime base to GGR instead of a gross wagering value of bets, as originally proposed.

What to expect when regulated

One of the points that the sports betting executives says is that, when the regulation happens, it will be similar to the regulations of already experienced markets like the UK and Denmark for example, which are a balance in the calculation basis for the collection of these taxes and the criminalization of the operation of bookmakers that did not have a license.

With the regulation taking place, betting companies tend to increase their contributions in sponsorships even more. The numbers of betting amounts are already known, it is a big trend that brands embrace football and other sports as well. Now, the big deal is who will be able to differentiate themselves and create activations and act in accordance with the laws once inserted in the market.

The fact is that we still do not have a regulated market for sports betting in Brazil, something that the federal government should have regulated and put into practice since 2019, but it is still an unresolved issue to be addressed. When the Brazilian market has finally created all the rules for the concession of betting services, we will certainly have large international bookmakers establishing themselves in Brazil and the amount invested in sports sponsorship should increase considerably.

Future of Sports and Online Casino gambling in Brazil

In Brazil, casinos were once a permitted and legal activity, however, in a description of the 1940s, these activities were prohibited. Since then, much has been discussed on the subject and in recent years this discussion about the Government with legalization projects already being voted on in various spheres.

The same goes for sports betting. The activity is still irregular in Brazil, however, Brazilians manage to make this type of bets on foreign sites. Although no site in this hostile niche is allowed in Brazil, bets are allowed on platforms that are hosted in countries where this service is duly regulated by the State.

A good option to help Brazilians find a reliable sports betting house or online casino on the internet is to do a very good research over the internet. The website apostacorreta.com helps Brazilians on how to review and find a reliable sports betting site and online casino. They assess the licenses, payment methods, support service quality, bonus and promotions offered by the sporting betting sites and online casinos operating in Brazil.
